Decision Support Tool for Insemination Management at Dairy Farms
Author: Wilma Steeneveld (contact: wilma.steeneveld@wur.nl)
A model was developed to support and evaluate the insemination management at a dairy farm. With the model, the economic optimal decision for a cow in estrus (inseminate now or delay insemination) can be determined. The user of the model has to fill-in herd characteristics (e.g., average 305-day milk production and average estrus detection rate) and characteristics about the cow in estrus (e.g., day in lactation, lactation number and 305-day milk production). The output of the model consists of the economic optimal decision, and the economic difference with the non-optimal decision. The model is developed in Microsoft Excel and can be filled-in easily and quickly. A English and Dutch version are available: |

Decision Support Tool to calculate the herd losses due to an extended calving interval
Author: Wilma Steeneveld (contact: wilma.steeneveld@wur.nl)
A model was developed to calculate the herd losses for an extended calving interval in dairy cows. The herd losses can be calculated with 2 methods: a quick and easy method, and a detailed method. For the quick and easy method, the user of the model have to fill in the number of milking cows, the 305-day milk production of the herd, and the current and desired calving interval. For the detailed method, the user of the model have to fill-in information about each cow in the herd (calving interval, 305-day milk production, parity number, and persistency level). The output of the model consists of the losses for the herd (€/year) for an extended calving interval. Also the returns (€/year) if the current calving interval will be decreased to a desired calving interval are presented. The model is developed in Microsoft Excel and can be filled-in easily and quickly. A English and Dutch version are available: |
